In the summer semester of 2024, the COIL seminar “Human Rights and Children’s Rights” was offered for the first time as a compulsory elective module in the Early Childhood Education program. The seminar took place in collaboration with lecturers and students from ASH Berlin, HAW Hamburg, and CSULB (California State University Long Beach) – the USW Students combined their seminar with a trip to Germany.

In this interdisciplinary seminar, bachelor’s students from ASH Berlin worked together with master’s students of social work from CSULB and HAW Hamburg. The seminar began with a hybrid kick-off at HAW Hamburg, with the ASH students participating virtually. After their visit to Hamburg, the CSULB students traveled to Berlin and visited SH Berlin and various social institutions.

At ASH Berlin, they participated in two seminars together with the Berlin students. The “Human Rights and Children’s Rights” seminar was held jointly with the students from Hamburg who attended virtually and was supplemented by a guest lecture. During this phase, the students were divided into groups and prepared presentations on topics relevant to the seminar, which were presented in a final online meeting.

The COIL phase took place over approximately six weeks. Students collaborated in hybrid and online meetings and presented their group work in a final online session. We collected student profiles and expectations in a Padlet to create a more personal start and also used Padlet to document the outcomes by collecting their final presentations.
